Mermaids are creatures that appear in Spyro: A Hero's Tail, Spyro: Season of Ice, and Spyro 2: Season of Flame. One of the mermaids is the boss Ineptune. Another one named Lily appears to Spyro, and give him some hints about where to go underwater.
Spyro: Season of Ice
A host of mermaids (and one merman) appear at the Mermaid Coast, a realm of the Autumn Fairy Home. They find their world plagued with Rhynocs after a handful of Fairies were held captive in frozen crystals throughout the world. They were eventually freed from their torment by Spyro.
Spyro 2: Season of Flame
Two of the mermaids from Season of Ice, Steffi and Queen Stacey, reappear in Watertopia, a realm of the Celestial Plains in Season of Flame. It is unknown if they relocated to this world or if it is simply another part of the Mermaid Coast. The mermaids find themselves once again under attack by the Rhynocs, this time under the command of Ripto instead of Grendor. Just like in the last game, they are saved by Spyro, who defeats the Rhynocs and recovers the scattered Fireflies that were lost to that world.
Mermaids are one of the water inhabitants of Skylands. One of the Skylanders, Gill Grunt, has a mermaid girlfriend who was kidnapped by Pirates. However, merfolk aren't always easy to get along with. They spend hours gazing at their own reflections in shimmering surfaces, they're constantly practicing holding their breath, and they become grumpy when their skin gets dry. Unlike the previous Spyro games, mermaids have a more fish-like appearance.
For many years, the sailors of Skylands did their best to avoid merpeople because of an old legend warned that mermaids liked nothing more than luring unsuspecting crewmen to their deaths. Also, they're a bit weird-looking, and sailors aren't generally keen on weird-looking things. All that changed, however, when the captain of a trading ship accidentally knocked his seventy-year old mother-in-law overboard while showing her how to scrub the poopdeck. The poor woman would almost certainly have drowned had she not been rescued by a passing mermaid. The captain was said to be "sobbing with joy" when his mother-in-law was returned safe and well, and since that day mermaids have been looked on much more favorably.
Skylanders: Gill Grunt and the Curse of the Fish Master
The mermaids made their notable appearance in the novel, Gill Grunt and the Curse of the Fish Master, where they reside in the underwater Kingdom of the Merpeople ruled by King Scalebeard, Prince Aquan, and Princess Finella. They were soon controlled by Captain Grimslobber, who used the Fish Master's Crown to control the mermaids and force them to dig up gem-eels and haul them to the surface where he could become rich. His evil plot was stopped thanks to the Skylanders, and the merfolk were freed.
