“The holes come up on the other side of the Dragon Worlds! We found some of the eggs, but they were too heavy to carry back!”
“The other side of the world?”
“The Forgotten Worlds/Realms.”
—Zoe, Spyro, and a Purple Dragon/Argus.

The Forgotten Realms, also known as the Forgotten Worlds, are the former homestead of the Dragons from the Dragon Realms, making its first appearance in Spyro: Year of the Dragon. It later made a reappearance in the game Spyro: Shadow Legacy.

History

Over a thousand years ago before the events of Spyro the Dragon, the Dragons originally lived in the Forgotten Realms alongside the evil Sorceress. But then one day, a Dragon Elder (Astor in the Spyro Reignited Trilogy) and the Sorceress had a huge argument, and in an act of spite, she casted a spell that banished him and all of the other Dragons to the other side of the world, which would eventually become known as the Dragon Realms.

With the Dragons gone, the Sorceress took full control over the Forgotten Realms with her army of Rhynocs, terrorizing its citizens in numerous ways. Some residents, such as Sheila the Kangaroo, Sgt. Byrd, Bentley the Yeti and Agent 9 attempted to fight back, but were then captured and scheduled for execution. She also took on a young rabbit girl named Bianca as her apprentice in magic, though she had little faith in her abilities. However, without the Dragons, all the magic in the Forgotten Realms eventually started to dry up. This was especially hazardous to the Sorceress since she needed magic to stay alive. Thus, she had her apprentice and a few Rhynocs infiltrate the Dragon Realms to steal all of their eggs, hoping that the hatchlings would restore the magic that was lost. But unbeknownst to Bianca, the Sorceress had actually planned to kill the young dragons and use their wings for a spell to make herself immortal.

After the eggs were stolen, the Dragon Elders send the young Spyro and his friend Hunter to retrieve them (since the holes leading to the Forgotten Realms were too big for the other Dragons to fit through). By gathering enough eggs, Spyro can reactivate some of the portals that had lost their magic, allowing him to venture into the various realms of the Forgotten Worlds to search for more eggs. Within these realms, Spyro helps out the inhabitants by fighting against the despicable Rhynocs and also recruit Sheila, Byrd, Bentley and Agent 9 into their cause by paying off Moneybags, who the Sorceress hired to guard them. In return, they help build devices to allow Spyro to traverse the Forgotten Realms.

In Sunrise Spring, Bianca attempted to drive them away but failed, so the Sorceress gives her a spellbook to create powerful monsters to eliminate them. After the first monster she creates, Buzz, is defeated by Spyro and Sheila, tries to create another monster from a bunny in Midday Gardens, only for it to turn on her, leading her to be saved by Hunter, who had developed a crush for the apprentice. The Sorceress then creates a monster of her own called Spike to succeed where Bianca had failed, but it was beaten by Spyro and Sgt. Byrd. She then captures Hunter in Evening Lake and decides to create one more monster called Scorch, to finish off Spyro, only for it to be defeated as well by the dragon and Bentley. During this, she reveals her true plan for the Dragon hatchlings to Bianca, leading her to forsake the the Sorceress as her teacher and release Hunter. In Midnight Mountain, Spyro finally confronts the Sorceress and defeats her with Agent 9's help, sending her into a pool of lava.

After besting the Sorceress, Spyro continues to hunt down the remaining eggs. After taking the second-last egg from Moneybags, as well as all treasure that he had given the greedy bear on his journey, he was able to enter the Super Bonus Round, where he battles the Sorceress for the last time in a UFO fight and takes the final egg from her. With the Sorceress finally gone, true peace was restored to the Forgotten Realms along with its magic.

Description

The Forgotten Realms consist of four homeworlds, and each one contains six portals leading to five regular realms and a speedway, as well as a certain amount of Dragon Eggs and gems to find and collect. Like in Ripto's Rage!, gems will either be scattered about or hiding in baskets, vases or other containers which Spyro will have to destroy. Dragon eggs will also be present, either resting in plain sight or hidden in certain places.

The individual realms will also have gems and eggs to find, but some eggs will have to be obtained by completing certain challenges for the inhabitants. In each realm, there is at least one egg to collect at the end of each world in order for it to be considered "completed", which is signified by a portal leading back to the homeworld appearing and an inhabitant rushing into it. In addition, a few eggs in some homeworlds and realms are carried by thieves, who Spyro must chase after and defeat in order to claim the egg they have.

In each homeworld, there are two portals (as well as the speedway besides the first one) that are deactivated due to the fading magic. After Spyro collects a certain amount of Dragon eggs, the portal will activate, allowing him to enter. There is at least one realm in each homeworld and certain areas in other realms that can only be accessed by one of the other playable characters; Shiela, Sgt. Byrd, Bentley and Agent 9. In order to unlock these realms and areas, Spyro must find the realm the character resides in (which basically acts as a tutorial level for said character), where he'll find them in a cage next to Moneybags, who will release them if Spyro pays him a certain amount of gems to free them.

The Speedways function as they did in the previous games, but with some differences: Like before, Spyro will have to either pass through or destroy certain obstacles or enemies at first in a certain amount of time in order to collect gems and a Dragon egg. Afterwards, he will be able to compete with the inhabitants of said speedway in a race for another egg, or free roam to find Hunter in a certain place so that the player can play as him to complete a certain challenge for yet another egg. When Hunter gets captured during Spyro's quest in Evening Lake, he will become unavailable in these speedways as well as in certain realms until Spyro travels to Midnight Mountain.

After completing a realm, the inhabitants that went into the portal leading back will work together to build a mode of transportation for Spyro. Once all five realms have been completed, they will finish the vehicle and Spyro will be able to travel to the next homeworld. Along the way, he will encounter one of the Sorceress' most powerful monsters, which the playable character from before will assist in defeating, and collect a single Dragon Egg after besting them. In the final homeworld, Midnight Mountain, Spyro will instead find a portal which, after collecting a hundred eggs, leads to an arena where he will face off against the Sorceress herself, whom he defeats with Agent 9's help.

Each homeworld will also have a sign showing Sparx left by Zoe, but Spyro will have to wait until later to use it. After defeating the boss of the homeworld, Zoe will appear next to the sign and offer a challenge for Sparx to retrieve a Dragon Egg and some gems by defeating a horde of tiny creatures and their leader.
