Association with Mythology and Folklore

Dragons are popular, mythological creatures used in many myths and folklore, usually from Asia or Europe. Although not existing in reality, they vary in many different shapes and sizes. They are also commonly referred to as "Red Monsters" because of their common red color and fire-breathing characteristic.

Original Spyro series

In the original series, adult dragons are depicted as either bipedal or quadraped, while young dragons are quadraped (presumably until they learn how to stand on their hind legs as they grow older). When hatched, young dragons receive a dragonfly that will protect them until they grow enough to defend themselves.

A thousand years ago, the Dragons originally resided in the Forgotten Realms, ruling the realm along with the Sorceress. However, one day, the Sorceress had an argument with a Dragon Elder and she grew so enraged that she banished him and the rest of the Dragons to the other side of the world, not knowing that the dragons were the source of all the magic in her world. The Dragons, who are peaceful creatures, chose not to bother with the Sorceress again.

They had braved a perilous journey across the oceans, ultimately finding a new land in what they call the Dragon Realms. The Dragons rebuilt their civilization using magic and advanced stonemasonry to build the Dragon Village. Afterwards, the oldest of dragons secluded themselves in the nearby hills and formed the Council of Elders, and has governed dragonkind for thousands of years.

In the Insomniac trilogy, the Dragons were divided into five dragon families, all who reside in their respective homeworlds: Artisans, Peace Keepers, Magic Crafters, Beast Makers, and Dream Weavers.

Dragons originally breathed ice, but this breath wasn't very useful. It was eventually discovered that when many fireflies are clumped together, their collective magic enables nearby dragons to breathe fire. Young dragons rely on Dragonflies for protection (e.g. Spyro relies on Sparx).

Myth

Legend tells that the Great Sea Dragon discovered the Dragon Realms. She swam to the Realms from the ancient homeland with her babies on her back. Exhausted from her swim, the Great Sea Dragon passed away on the shore, right where the Dragon Shores' fountain stands.

The Legend of Spyro series

Before Malefor's existence and his choice of evil, the Dragons were revered among the inhabitants of the Realm. The Dragons had an alliance with the Moles, and the Moles made a city in dedication of their friendship. The Guardian Dragons created the Dragon Temple to raise and train young dragons. The Dragons in The Legend of Spyro series are completely quadraped, unlike the dragons from the original Spyro series.

After Malefor turned to evil, the Guardians and their dragon warriors fought against Malefor's army of Apes while the other Dragons protected the dragon eggs that were their very survival. During the war, many of the Guardian Dragons lost their lives, leaving only four Guardians to remain. Other dragons however, took part in the battle against the Dark Armies prior and during the events of The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon.

Abilities

Dragons have different breaths that are based on the color of their scales: Red for Fire, Yellow for Electricity, Blue for Ice, or Green for Earth.

  • The Purple Dragon, including Spyro, is a rare species of dragon that can master any element other dragons can't, and even controls time.
  • Cynder, having been corrupted by Malefor, is a black dragon who controls abilities that are most uncommon: Shadow, Wind, Poison, and Fear.

Skylanders series

Dragons are one of the native species that reside in Skylands, with Spyro being one of the many dragon characters. Skylands features a variety of dragon species, from water dragons to rock dragons, undead dragons, and even rare purple dragons. It is mentioned that Dragons are also pranksters.

The Dragons in Skylanders are apparently ruled by a King, who resides in the realm of Dragon's Peak, a place that is considered special to dragons because whichever sits on the Dragon's Throne becomes the new king, and where the oldest and largest of their kind reside. Ramses is the current Dragon King, having ruled over the lands with peace and harmony for centuries. Some fear that Vathek, an Undead dragon and Ramses'a evil brother, may one day try to steal the throne. However, Vathek eventually took the throne himself and ruled as king of Dragon's Peak, but was soon thwarted by the Skylanders.

Since few Dragons other than the Skylanders are encountered elsewhere, the Dragons may very well be one of the rarest species in all of Skylands. It is mentioned in many of the Dragons' biographies that they tend to be outsiders. Despite being shunned by those around them (including their own kind), Dragons do have a strong sense of responsibility or purpose.

Dragon Politics of Dragon's Peak

The Dragons used to vote for their leaders but their political system became so complex, no one could understand it. Even the act of voting became difficult for most Dragons. And those who wanted to rule had to campaign and make speeches, and nobody in particular liked it so they finally just said, forget it. Whoever sits on the throne is King. Luckily, for them, the first to do so was Ramses. Not only was he the quickest to sit down but he happened to also be the most qualified to lead.[1]

Abilities

The Dragons in Skylanders are slightly similar to Spyro in appearance, but have different techniques. Their attacks are based on the elements they are closely connected to. Younger Dragons are highly adaptive to their surroundings, making the way they are raised a key factor in determining their adult forms, powers and personalities.

Magical Purple Dragons, like Spyro, have the ability to harness the power of the other elements, including the power of The Darkness itself to become Dark Spyro.

Trivia

  • In the Skylanders series, the female Dragons are revealed to have no teeth, while the males have them (with the exception of Sunburn due to being half phoenix, half dragon).
